A Brussels Impact avant-première of Gates of Europe’s special 52-minute version
🗣️ Panel Discussion : Gates of Europe
The Pact on Migration and Asylum is now fully applicable, and the new Return Regulation has become law. The European Commission has also announced it will propose a reinforced mandate for Frontex, the EU’s border agency, before the end of the year. Against this backdrop, Newframes brings together MEPs, EU officials, journalists, civil society and the Brussels public around one question : can Europe protect its borders while upholding human rights ?
The discussion will be followed by the Brussels Impact avant-première of Gates of Europe (Eefje Blankevoort, Els van Driel and Tomas Kaan, Scenery/VPRO, 2026), shown in a special 52-minute version created for this evening. With three years of access inside Frontex, from its Warsaw headquarters to operations at Europe’s external borders, the series offers a rare look at how European border policy is carried out in practice, and at the people it affects.

🎥 Film Screening : Gates of Europe
With three years of access to the controversial European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex, this film investigates how Europe guards its borders. Originally a four-part series, shown here in a special 52-minute version, it follows the agency’s new director, border guards, politicians, activists, and survivors. Can Europe protect its borders while also upholding human rights ? Using the film ‘Gates of Europe’ as a starting point, we discuss the featured individuals and the dilemmas they face. From the director of Frontex to survivors, politicians, and civilian aid workers – their perspectives coexist, yet they rarely see or hear one another.
